Women Experiencing Hair Loss Due To Pulling Hair Back While Exercising

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Is your workout making you bald?

More and more women are noticing they are losing their hair and it could be because of something they are doing when they exercise.

It's called traction alopecia and it's caused by the constant pulling back of your hair.

"If you are wearing your hair pulled back and pulled back tightly or with a tight headband, that's going to be a problem. That's going to lead to hair loss and that can be permanent," says Dr. Laura Ferris, a dermatologist at UPMC.

Pulling the hair back can yank hair out and it can also damage the root.

But, there is good news because it can be reversible.

If you notice you are starting to lose your hair along your hairline, Dr. Ferris says stop what you are doing.

"So, just simply letting the hair down is going to let it recover and ultimately start to regrow," says Dr. Ferris.

Traction alopecia can also be a problem for girls and men who have long hair and who wear it pulled back all day for school or work.
