Premature graying can be a sign of a poor diet. It is normal to have gray hair at a certain age. However, if hair begins graying at a younger age, it will affect the personal appearance. One way to fight this is by taking anti-aging treatments. But there is another way that is simpler, and it is by watching the diet. The western diet, also known as Standard American Diet (SAD), is composed mainly of foods that, taken in large and frequent quantities, are toxic to the body, and promote hair graying, skin inflammation, and even dermatitis, among others. This diet is composed mainly of animal foods containing saturated fat, processed foods with fat additives, white sugar, and sugary foods and drinks, among others. This diet also promotes heart disease. This diet affects hair and skin by disrupting a certain type of lipids called glycosphingolipids (GLS), which are located on the top layer of the skin and in the hair pigment. A poor diet alters the production of these fats, leaving the skin exposed to damage, and affecting the color of the hair. This affects also other lipids that protect the hair and skin and also moisturize it. This can be reversed by eating more plant-based foods, less meat, sugar, and dairy.
